Cool Weather Warmth

With cooler weather headed our way here in northern N.A. climes, outdoor photographers have to start to thing about keeping warm in the chillier temps.  Hands are particularly difficult because of the need to handle the camera and manipulate the controls.

The best thing I’ve found for this is a pair of mechanic’s gloves.  These are fairly thin, close-fitting gloves that provide a reasonable amount of insulation as well as allowing enough dexterity to adjust camera settings.  They’re good down to probably about freezing on their own (assuming you’re active) and are light enough that they can be worn under an outer pair of mitts when the temperatures drop below freezing.  I find them preferable to the fingerless gloves or the mitts that allow you to uncover the fingers for fairly obvious reasons; not the least of which is that your fingers are still bare in those.

Probably the most popular brand is Mechanix Wear.  Also probably more expensive.  There are other brands out there and any decent automotive supply shop should sell them.  Here in Canada, Canadian Tire has a good selection of a few different brands.  They range in price from about $14 to over $40 for the super-duper, extra deluxe, lighted, magnetic ones.  You don’t need those.  I picked up a new pair recently for $15.

Have you tried mechanic’s gloves?  What types of things do you do to keep your hands warm in the cooler weather?
